NATO (Alphabet Book) (2022)

An alphabet book, designed to be owned by women.

Based on the NATO phonetic alphabet, which is used by institutions, like the police, this project responds to the artist’s experience witnessing its use - including many male names - during a women’s report of rape. Recognising the implications for safeguarding and sensitivity, the artist created a new, feminist alphabet grounded in women’s words. This act of linguistic reclamation challenges institutional power structures and offers a more empathic framework, allowing women to reclaim agency in a process often marked by distress and disempowerment.
